The Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest community improvement movement that launches more than 30,000 programs with 1,200 Keep America Beautiful affiliates and participating organizations convening millions of volunteers. Volunteers participate in a variety of activities focused on waste reduction, recycling, beautification and community greening.

Keep Oakland Beautiful has participated in Keep America Beautiful’s National Day of Action as one of 10 featured, top-performing affiliates. In 2012, we marked the Great American Cleanup with an event along the Bancroft Median in East Oakland. Over 500 volunteers picked up litter, weeded, mulched, and pruned the 33 blocks of the 50-feet wide median. Simultaneously, volunteers worked at Verdese Carter Park building raised planter beds for residents to grow food. Additionally 15-20 fruit and ornamental trees were planted at East Oakland PRIDE Elementary School. View photos from the event here.
Keep Oakland Beautiful thanks the community for their ongoing support, and for the large turnout of volunteers for this event. This video captures the enthusiasm of the Great American Cleanup in Oakland.
