2021 Updates: New year, new beginnings!

3/12/2021

Despite the challenges last year brought, we are hopeful and excited for 2021! Looking back at 2020, Keep Oakland Beautiful had to adjust like everyone else but we are so inspired by the way we saw our community come together to keep Oakland clean and beautiful but also to support each other in staying safe and healthy.

We have lots of exciting things to look forward to this year. Just to name a few...
  • Small grant applications are now open! The KOB Small Grant Program is one of our major projects for the year. We give out 10+ small grants of up to $800 every year to support projects that keep Oakland beautiful and clean. We are excited to see what creative ideas you have! Past successful grant projects include planting trees, shrubs, flowers, community gardens;  park and open space clean-up and beautification; and graffiti removal and murals. Learn more about our small grant program and apply here.
  • Fresh faces and new ideas (new board members)! This year we have 11 new board members that we are excited to welcome to the team. They bring a wide variety of experience and ideas but most importantly all are passionate about getting involved in keeping Oakland beautiful. Learn more about our board members on our website.
  • Spring is coming! Outdoor community spaces are more important than ever and spring in Oakland means parks are green, flowers are blooming, the sun is shining. There’s no better time to enjoy the outdoors and find safe ways to get involved in our community. Stay tuned (and follow us on social media) for news on local events and volunteer opportunities, Earth Day, and much more!

Phoenix Rising Peace Park Garden, Susan Boggiano
KOB gave a grant to renovate our neighborhood Adopt a Spot park. The project successfully involved neighborhood volunteers (ranging from 4 to 75 years old) in a community building event making mosaic stepping stones to beautify the park.  The average volunteer spent about 8 hours working on their mosaic piece. Some flagstones and stepping stones were donated by neighbors. We had our first neighborhood party to celebrate the new space in June with the many volunteers in attendance. The new space has seen a lot more visitors since the renovation.

Check out the website for more info.

By painting images and/or words near storm drains, you can teach the public about how litter on land harms wildlife in our streams and oceans, and also human health.

An attractive litter container will hopefully encourage community members to use it, therefore reducing litter in the environment.

Creek to Bay Day is Creek to Bay Month!

9/1/2020

This September marks the 25th year of Creek to Bay in Oakland.  This year due to Covid-19 we are transforming a day set aside for watershed clean ups to a whole month of cleaning, greening and beautifying our neighborhoods, parks and creeks.  So go outside by yourself or with your social bubble and do something to help improve the health of our local creeks and watersheds.  Every little bit helps!

Check out this website: www.oaklandcreektobay.org to learn more about how you can participate in Creek to Bay month!
